Comparing the Fuji Mini-Mite Platinum 3, Platinum 4, and Platinum 5 Spray Systems
Fuji Mini-Mite 3 Reviews and Awards
The 3-stage (6.5 PSI) Fuji Mini-Mite 3 has consistently won top ratings in comparison tests for serious woodworkers. Based on rigorous comparison tests of 14 HVLP spray systems, Fine Woodworking ranked the Mini-Mite 3 awards as “Best Overall” choice, plus the “Best Value.”
The tester rated the Mini-Mite 3 excellent on both ease of adjustment (with the convenient side-mounted fan width adjustment) and excellent for spray quality. This was in Sept. 2014, before Fuji improved the Mini-Mite 3 still further to make the current Platinum model.
The Mini-Mite 3 Platinum won the same awards in March 2017, based on comparison tests at Wood Magazine. Not only did the Mini-Mite 3 Platinum earn the Top Value award — it was also one of Wood Magazine’s Top Tools of the Year.
Comparing the Mini-Mite 3 Platinum with 8 other HVLP spray systems, this review rated each system on ten different factors — including how well each sprayed latex paint, lacquer, and water-based finishes.
The Mini-Mite 3 Platinum earned an A on each of the ten factors, except for a B+ for spraying latex. (The Fuji Q4 was the only tested spray system to earn an A on all ten — confirming the recommendation to step up to a 4-stage system if you want to spray latex much of the time.)
Wood Magazine tested the Mini_Mite 3 turbine noise at a distance of 10 feet (closer than the recommended 15 to 20 feet) at 78 decibels — about twice as loud as the 59-decibel Platinum Q3 — but less than an average garbage disposal.
Do these awards for the Mini-Mite 3 means it’s a better choice than the Mini-Mite Platinum 4 and 5 systems? No, of course not. The added fans make the turbines a bit louder, but if you need the extra power of the 4- and 5-stage Mini-Mite systems, be assured that the same features and quality make them winners too. (If you’re not sure of the power you need, check out the page on How to Choose an HVLP Spray System or better yet, just call me!)
Fuji Mini-Mite Platinum Advantages
The Fuji Mini-Mite Platinum spray systems keep the patented Fan Pattern Control that provides smooth adjustments in spray pattern shape and size — from a wide oval to a circle. The T-series spray guns that come with these systems, the T70 and T75G, put the control knob on the side of the spray gun near the front, where it’s very easy to reach. So does the redesigned Fuji Gxpc spray gun. Learn more —> about the Fuji T70, T75G, and Gxpc spray guns.
All three Fuji Mini-Mite Platinum spray systems include patented devices to minimize both noise and heat.
A Heat Dissipation Box keeps the turbine cooler, extending its life. This box, located at the rear of the case, sends excess heat out evenly through 60 holes. This means there’s no added hiss or loud whistling noise, nor any blowing around of dust.
A Noise Reduction Cover muffles incoming air by drawing it in through a large rear aperture, then through specially designed “Finger Slots.”
All system parts are designed and built for comfort, ease of use, and durability, and carry a 24-month limited warranty on parts and labor.
The spray guns use stainless steel for needles and fluid passages, and have insulated ergonomic handles.
The hose comes with quick-connect fittings at both ends, plus a convenient air flow valve at the gun end — so you don’t have to walk back to turbine to adjust or shut off the air.
The turbine metal cases are powder coated, and include spray gun mounts for storing or resting the gun when not in use.
The friction-fit air filters are quick to change, washable and reusable.
The turbines are also available in 220v for use in other countries.
Three Mini-Mite Platinum Models
All three use the same spray guns, have the same great features, simply vary in the number of turbine fans. For example, the 3-stage Mini-Mite Platinum 3 uses 3 fans (for 6.5 PSI).
The 4-stage Mini-Mite Platinum 4, at 9 PSI, is about 20 percent more powerful than the 6.5 PSI Mini-Mite Platinum 3. Recommended if you plan to spray large areas, or might spray latex or other heavy finishes.
The 5-stage Mini-Mite Platinum 5 (9.5 PSI) is about 20 percent more powerful than the Mini-Mite Platinum 4. It sprays an area about 3 times faster than a Mini-Mite Platinum 3. Check out two videos of spraying a house with the Mini-Mite 5.
Now the Mini-Mite 5 also has a turbine motor that runs cooler than ever. This extends turbine life and adds user comfort.
Fuji also includes a Bonus of 5 accessories with this 5-stage spray system: a 6-foot whip hose, 19-piece spray gun cleaning kit, extra pair of turbine filters, a wet film gauge, and an “Always Measure” booklet.
I include bonus items, and offer money-saving packages for each Mini-Mite system. Each package adds useful accessories and maintenance parts, and I assemble custom packages as needed.
