How to Choose the Best Spray Tanning Machine and Spray Gun
Fuji SUNLESS pro spray tanning machines are built for quality, convenience, and comfort. These HVLP (high volume low pressure) spray tan machines provide a pleasant tanning experience that results in a smooth, even tan.
These 3 spray tan machines are designed precisely for spraying only tanning solution.
All come bundled as spray tan kits, with your choice among three excellent tanning spray guns (called applicators when used for tanning).
If you prefer a different hvlp spray tan gun, I will gladly assemble a custom package for you with your choice of spray tan machine + spray tan gun.

Which Fuji hvlp spray tan machine will best meet your needs?
The most important differences among the three Fuji SUNLESS hvlp turbines:
Noise level: The salonTAN is extremely quiet at about 56 db — quieter than the average conversation. The studioTAN and soloTAN are not nearly as quiet.
Mobility:
The small, sleek soloTAN is designed for mobility — weighs just 4.6 pounds (80% lighter than the 23.2-lb. salonTAN).
The 14.4-pound studioTAN is also light enough to carry.
Professional use: Both the salonTAN and studioTAN can handle all-day use. The soloTAN is designed for up to ten sessions a day.
Personal, home, and entry-level use: The budget-priced soloTAN is designed for up to 10 sessions a day, and it’s small size and light weight make it easy to carry and store.
Price: The soloTAN is the least expensive, the studioTAN more, and the salonTAN the top of the line.
Warranty: The pro-level studioTAN and salonTAN systems both carry a 24-month warranty. The light-duty soloTAN carries a 12-month warranty.
Luxury heavy duty professional model — the Fuji salonTAN:
Designed with extra quiet performance to help clients relax and enjoy their salon experience.
Professional sytem — Built for 40 or more tanning sessions a day
Includes three features unique to Fuji Spray:
Fuji Spray’s patented Noise Suppression Technology keeps the turbine running at about 56 decibels, quieter than an average conversation.
Noise Reduction Cover on the filter also muffles sound by drawing air through indirect slots.
Fuji Spray’s patented Heat Dissipation Box brings down the temperature of the exhaust air, for cooler running and longer turbine life. This also enhances the sound quality, protects the client from excess heat, and minimizes air movement that could blow dust or disturb the spray pattern.
Additional luxury features and specifications:
24-month warranty on parts and labor
Powered by a 2-stage Bypass motor
Breaker reset switch for safety.
UL/CSA approved for cosmetic use — important for professional insurance coverage.
The 23.2-pound (10.5 kg) turbine is built for stability and durability.
Single washable filter with quick friction fit.
Convenient metal holder for applicator on top of turbine.
Choose among the Fuji Spray T-PRO 4200 applicator, the Fuji Spray TAN7350, or the new lightweight Fuji Spray 7555 FT-5. (Scroll down for details.)
PRO SALON AND MOBILE MODEL — the Fuji studioTAN:
Fuji Spray’s Noise Reduction Covers™ muffle direct sound paths. Note that the studioTAN isn’t nearly as quiet as the salonTAN. This is one key difference between the studioTAN and the quieter salonTAN.
This drawback is balanced by the other key difference: flexibility of the studioTAN for BOTH salon and mobile use — because the studioTAN weighs just 14.4 pounds, compared with the 23.2-lb. salonTAN.
Even with the applicator and hose, the total system weighs about 18.2 pounds. The handled 14.4-pound turbine is easy to load on a dolly, and the optional Fuji #7474 backpack can hold the applicator, hose, and extra supplies.
Patented Heat Dissipation Box brings down the temperature of the exhaust air, for cooler running and longer turbine life. This also enhances the sound quality, protects the client from excess heat, and minimizes air movement that could blow dust or disturb the spray pattern.
Built for 25 to 40 tanning sessions a day
24-month warranty on parts and labor
2-stage Bypass turbine motor
Reset safety switch on turbine
UL/CSA approved for cosmetic use — important for professional insurance coverage.
Dual washable filters with quick friction fit
Metal holder on turbine top can even hold applicator when carrying the system around.
Choose among the Fuji Spray T-PRO 4200 applicator, the Fuji Spray TAN7350, or the new lightweight Fuji Spray 7555 FT-5. (Scroll down for details.)
For home and personal use — the Fuji soloTAN:
The Fuji soloTAN machine has special features for mobility, home, and entry-level use:
Turbine weighs just 4.6 pounds.
Both padded handle and optional shoulder strap included.
Cord wraps around the base for mobility and storage.
Curved design is comfortable to carry.
Small and easy to store. (Turbine is only 11.4 x 8.5 x 7.9 inches.)
Even with the applicator, shoulder strap, and hose, total carrying weight is about 12 pounds.
The optional Fuji #7474 backpack is available for storing and carrying the hose, applicator, and accessories in convenient internal pockets. It weighs less than 1.5 pounds.
Other soloTAN features:
Designed for elegance as well as performance
Budget-priced — good entry-level system for starting to build a client base, as well as for personal home use.
As of October, 2022, available at a special budget price with the super lightweight TAN7400 applicator. Choose among the Fuji Spray T-PRO 4200 applicator, the Fuji Spray TAN7350, or the new lightweight Fuji Spray 7555 FT-5. (Scroll down for details.)
Built for 5 to 10 tanning sessions a day
Light-weight 450-watt motor
CE approved for safety.
Fairly loud despite the smaller motor.
12-month warranty on parts and labor
The safety breaker switch is internal (no external reset switch). After letting the turbine cool off (usually 15 to 20 minutes) you can turn it back on.
A special slot on the turbine case can hold the applicator securely during a tanning session. The handle or shoulder strap rotates out of the way for this. (The optional Fuji #7474 backpack holds the applicator when carrying the system from one place to another.)
Replacing the filter is tool free, but does require removing a grill on the turbine: Video: Changing the soloTAN filter

The turbines (spray tan machines) for all three tanning kits come with:
washable and replaceable foam filter(s) to protect the motor,
detailed user manual, wrench, and cleaning brush,
a ten-foot ultra-flexible “whip hose” for easy maneuvering while spraying, with a quick-connect fitting for attaching the spray applicator. The long hose length also keeps the applicator cool and the turbine further from the spray area,
a carrying handle,
a place for holding the tanning spray applicator securely between tanning sessions. The quick-connect fitting on the hose makes it easy to detach the hose so you can rest the applicator with a spray cup still attached to the applicator.
Fuji Spray optional parts and accessories for durability and convenience:
Optional Air control valve (Fuji #2032) adds extra control over air flow, conveniently placed between applicator and hose.
19-piece Cleaning Kit (Fuji #3100) includes brushes, precision tools, and lubricant for easy maintenance of your applicators.
Backpack #7474 stores the air hose, one or two applicators, extra fluid cups, and other accessories, for clean, convenient storage and carrying.
A pair of extra quick-connect adapters (Fuji #2046 and #2046M) can save time when attaching and detaching the hose at the turbine.
Replacement turbine filters and tanning cup parts are readily available.
WHICH OF THE 4 applicators DO YOU WANT with your spray tanning kit?
All the Fuji SUNLESS applicators that come bundled in these spray tanning kits (turbine machine, hose, and applicator) hold the spray fluid cups at the bottom, for good balance in the hand and so they can be set down on a flat surface.
How these applicators work:
“Bleeder gun” type — Air flows through the applicator’s nozzle as soon as the turbine is turned on. This means the applicator can also be used as a blow dryer after tanning fluid is sprayed on.
The trigger starts the flow of tanning fluid, which mixes with air to create a fine, even mist and an even coating of tanning fluid.
Each applicator has a FujiSpray patented Pattern Control Knob. The location varies with each applicator model, but the pattern control knob lets you
make incremental adjustments to the spray pattern size — between about 0.5 inches to 12 inches —
and the spray pattern orientation — the most common vertical (for side to side spraying), horizontal (for spraying up and down the body) and circular (for touchups). On some models, this is adjusted by rotating the air cap at the front of the applicator.
The fluid control knob at the rear of the applicator lets you adjust the amount of fluid flowing to the spray tip.
The FujiSpray patented ergonomic Stay Cool handle on all-metal applicators (the 4200 T-PRO and the TAN7350) stays comfortable and cool for many tanning sessions in a row. The budget TAN7400 and the new, more ergonomic FT-5) have polymer bodies and handles that stay cool because of their material.
Each of the three Fuji tanning spray machines comes bundled with your choice among spray tan applicators that have stainless steel fluid components for durability, plus handles that stay cool. The T-Pro and the TAN7350 also have all-metal bodies, and can be bundled with any of the Fuji SUNLESS systems.
The soloTAN spray machine can also be ordered with the budget-priced TAN7400 applicator, which has stainless fluid passages and a handle that stays cool, but a partly plastic body.
The T-PRO 4200 is the newer, more convenient luxury spray tan gun, while the classic TAN7350 has gotten good reviews for years. The TAN7400 is also an older model, and the least expensive applicator — bundled only with the light-duty soloTAN system.
The newest Fuji SUNLESS applicator, the 5550 FT-5, has a sale price of only $20 more than the TAN7350, but weighs only about a fourth as much. This makes it far more comfortable, especially for doing several tans a day. It’s also the only applicator that comes with two cups, including a small 5-ounce cup — for one or two tans.
Two additional Fuji SUNLESS applicators are available separately, not bundled in a kit. These are non-bleeder style, but can still be used as blow dryers if you pull the trigger very slightly.

The best pro spray tan gun: luxury top of the line T-PRO 4200:
The spray nozzle is designed for the ultimate in smooth fine spraying.
More parts can be deep cleaned to remove tanning fluid buildup.
The trigger is especially ergonomic.
A side-mounted pattern control knob for extra convenience. It’s placed so you can hold the applicator handle in the right hand, and easily adjust the spray pattern size with the left hand.
Both the 4200 T-PRO and the less expensive TAN7350 (see below) use the same cups for tanning fluid:
Hold 250cc (a bit over 8 ounces) of fluid, plenty for a full body tan.
The fluid cups are pressurized, for even sprays.
The plastic is translucent enough to show the level of the tanning spray.
The new design includes a “duck bill” under the lid, which works as a one-way valve to keep fluid out of the air supply. This makes the tubes free of check valves so they’re easier to clean.
Additional excellent features shared by both applicators:
Light weight! An applicator with an empty cup weighs only about 2 pounds. (Note that the newer FT-5 weighs much less — 12.5 ounces.)
The fluid cups are pressurized, for even sprays.
Quick, clean and neat cup changes are easy, since the cups unscrew from the bottom of the applicators. (That’s why they’re called “bottom-feed” spray guns.
Come with a capacious 250cc (8-ounce) pressurized plastic cup, complete with a replaceable gasket, pressure tube, and a “duck bill” under the lid (which serves as a one-way valve to keep fluid out of the air supply).
Extra 8-ounce cups are available with lids, making it easy to store different shades of tanning spray.
The applicators use different nozzles, but the same 0.8mm size air cap for a very fine spray.
The classic TAN7350 spray tan gun:
Mounts the pattern control knob at the rear — which might be more convenient for left-handed users.
Can still be deep cleaned.
Shares the same spray cups and most of the great features as the more expensive T-PRO applicator.
Has long been a favorite, and can produce excellent results at a moderate price.
The new 7555 FT-5 is available separately and can be bundled with any of the three SUNLESS tanning systems.
At 12.5 ounces with an empty 5-ounce cup the FT-5 weighs only about a fourth of the T7350. This makes it ideal both for portable spray tanning systems (The soloTAN and studioTAN) and for easing operator fatigue with the salonTAN system.
It has stainless steel fluid passages and a comfortable ergonomic design (much nicer to hold than the budget TAN 7400).
The top-mounted fan pattern control knob is great for both left-handed and right-handed users, and provides incremental changes in pattern (vertical, horizontal, or circular) for precise spraying.
Performance is excellent, with smooth streak-free results from the 0.8mm air cap.
With few internal parts, the FT-5 is also quick and easy to maintain and clean.
Carries a 24-month warranty.
Comes bundled with:
5-ounce cup and lid
8-ounce cup and lid
2 pressure tubes
cleaning brush
optional hook for hanging
storage bag
The TAN7400 can be bundled with the soloTAN only, or bought as an extra spraytan applicator.
The 10-oz (300cc) cup is larger than most spray tan cups, shaped wide and squat for stability, bottom-feed for easy cup changes and good balance.
Partly plastic, but with stainless steel fluid passages and needle.
Handle stays cool, is less ergonomic than the more expensive applicators.
You can buy an extra 10-ounce cup, the #7430 — nice to have ready for a quick change between tanning sessions.
Fits on the salonTAN and studioTAN holders, and with the optional #7442 insert, also fits on the soloTAN.
The nozzle is an older, less refined version, with a smaller 0.7mm air cap.
One-year warranty on parts and labor. Fuji 12-Month Limited Warranty
Two additional spray tan applicators are available also:
Offer special advantages that the more all-purpose applicators can’t offer.
Designed as extra tanning spray guns for special situations, or for use by other salon staff.
Can be used as your main applicator, if you assemble your own kit by adding the 10-foot whip hose plus the SUNLESS spray tan turbine of your choice.
Both are non-bleeder types, so when the trigger isn’t pulled, the air flow stops. This enables very delicate sprays. These applicators can still be used as blow dryers, by pulling the trigger very, very gently.
Fuji T-PRO 4000 Spray Tan Gun— gravity feed, light and easy to maneuver, with 3-ounce Teflon-lined aluminum tanning fluid cup.
This luxury pro spray tan gun has the great build quality and performance of the bottom-feed T-PRO, with the advantages of lighter weight and a gravity-feed flow that eliminates wasted fluid.
The gravity-feed style makes it easier to use all the tanning fluid, to minimize waste. The small, lightweight cup is center-mounted for good balance. The light weight is ideal for mobility and minimizes fatigue.
This tanning spray gun was formerly bundled in Fuji Spray Tan kits with turbines and hose, as you can see from the Fuji SUNLESS user manual. You can easily assemble your own spray tan kit if this is the applicator you prefer as you main one.
“Non-bleeder” type — easy to control, as it sprays only when the trigger is pulled.
Small 3-oz metal cup is light weight, easy to maneuver, but holds enough for an average full body tan.
Air cap is slightly bigger (1.0mm) than on the bottom-feed applicators, which speeds tanning.
Tanning fluid flows into the applicator even when angled a bit, so you can use all the fluid in the cup.
Lightweight aluminum gravity cup is Teflon lined for stain resistance.
Gravity cup is nicely centered for good balance.
Pattern knob is mounted on the side, the most convenient place.
Can still be used as a blow dryer by gently pulling the trigger just a bit.
Carries a 24-month warranty
Newer contour applicator — Fuji TAN9620 spray gun — for delicate precision modeling of face and body.
Provides the delicate control otherwise easier to achieve with an airbrush and mini-compressor. All you need is this applicator and an HVLP tanning spray turbine.
Airbrush trigger for precise control.
Side-mounted pattern control knob easy to reach for adjusting fan width.
Fan width ranges from 1/4 inch to 6 inches.
Three adjustable fan orientations: circle, horizontal, vertical (by rotating the air cap).
All metal body, with stainless steel tip assembly (1.0mm air cap set)
Uses same quick-change 8-ounce (250cc) plastic cups as the T-PRO 4200 applicator.
Cup fits into the applicator holder ONLY on the soloTAN. (This applicator doesn’t fit on the salonTAN or studioTAN applicator holders, because they’re designed for hanging an applicator. There’s no way to hang the 9420.)
Fits any brand of HVLP spray tanning turbine that has a 3/4-inch Quick Connect Fitting at the applicator end of the hose.
Note that this spray tan applicator plus any SUNLESS turbine gives you the big advantages of HVLP — a faster, softer, better diffused spray with less waste and blow back — plus the fine precision of the older airbrush/compressor method.
Manuals and instruction aids
These two Fuji SUNLESS manuals include detailed instructions for spraying smooth, even tans, as well as safety, maintenance, and cleanup directions.
Manual for Fuji SUNLESS 9620 Contour Applicator
User Manual for SUNLESS spray tanning systems
Note that this User Manual says the T-PRO 4200 spray gun comes with more than the wrench, but currently it comes ONLY with the wrench, one cleaning brush, and the manual. Also, the gravity-feed T-PRO 4000 is no longer a current bundle offer (though you can easily assemble your own spray tan kit with it). The new Fuji SUNLESS 1125 system isn’t mentioned in this manual.
Training Tips from the National Tanning Training Institute (NTTI)
Air cap setups: Note that the TAN7350 uses the #7020 M-model air cap setups, and the T-PRO applicators use the #5100 air cap setups. However, it’s extremely rare for a tanning spray user to change the air cap size, or ever need to replace one. Just be assured that the air caps CAN be replaced if there’s ever a need.
